Engineer turned painter
Somsak Hanumas was born in Bangkok in 1980, passed through the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology in Ladkrabang, destined for engineering. Graduated, he chose painting, self-taught, in a tiny workshop, humid, without real heating. He develops a slow technique: ground, cloud of points, then lines superimposed with fine brush, acrylic and lacquer. A painting takes eight to twelve weeks.
From Landscape Watermark to Color Field
Behind the network, we sometimes guess a beach in Bangkok, a monsoon field, a jungle edge—or nothing but a sensation of light. The titles in your inventory—rainbow circle, black blue star, sun, sunset, khaki white, orange white, reference 304 (180 × 130 cm), reference 623—correspond to this shift of the landscape towards the sun and the climate. Asiart Gallery (Bordeaux) has been with her for more than fifteen years; 2022, Palazzo Bembo at the Venice Biennale marks a turning point.
An Asian rating in Europe
Paintings have been included in LVMH, Magrez, Nordic foundations, boutiques and sales collections on the Côte d’Azur. Hanumas is not an heir to the Paris School; he brings to the collection a long, almost meditative time, in contrast to the unique gesture of Verdier or the cry of Combas.
